flying ant controlThere are many people who decide to use essential oils for pest control. This is due to the fact that they think that they are choosing natural solutions. There are even some people who think that essential oils not only help, but are also very healthy. The truth is that, while they can be used to eliminate a few ants, using essential oils for pest control is a bad idea. It could be a temporary solution to an eventual permanent problem should the pest problem not be contained. Here are some reasons you should avoid using essential oils for pest control.

1. They aren’t 100% natural.

Essential oil is basically the oil of the plant from which it was extracted. They’re called essential because they should contain the essence of the plant. Nowadays, the use of essential oils is subject to regulation. The problems appeared when people begin to claim how these oils have curative effects. The quality of essential oil is influenced by factors like geography, weather, how was the plant stored and packaged, and many others. Each plant is unique, and it’s not possible to create the same oil every time. Mass production of essential oils is so common nowadays and it’s hard to keep them 100% natural.

2. Some pests will survive.

You can take care of a few ants with a peppermint oil. If you spray them with essential oils and you never see them again, that means that you don’t have serious ant problems. Maybe those were just a scout ants and you’ve managed to prevent them from establishing a nest somewhere inside your home. But, when you find out you have carpenter ants, or you see ants with large wings, don’t even think about essential oils. They require a professional help.

It’s the same with bed bugs. They are so resilient that they can survive in your freezer for some time. They can also live for a year without eating and sometimes it takes multiple pest control treatments to get rid of them. A little essential oil is not going to make them go away.

3. They don’t work for infestations.

You can use essential oils for preventing pests and maybe bug bites, but make sure to buy the ones that are safe for your children and pests. When you’re preparing your home for the winter, you should do a proper pest control. This includes sealing all possible entry points, cleaning, and inspecting your area properly. If you choose to use essential oils for pest control at this stage, you can. But, if our home is already invaded by cockroaches, fleas, ants, mosquitoes, and mice forget about essential oils. Infestations should be left to the pros.

So the conclusion is that if you really want to get rid of pests, using essential oils for pest control is not a good idea. There are many DIY solutions that are helpful and effective, but essential oils are not one of them. If you really want to make sure you get rid of your pests for good, hiring a pest control professional is the best way to go.
