Bed Bugs: We’ve Come to Suck Your Blood…

If you have ever experienced a bed bug infestation, you know that these blood-loving buggers are an absolute pain to deal with. Not only can their bites cause red, itchy welts, but their overall presence can be bothersome – mainly because they are not easy to get rid of. Identifying a bed bug problem in the home can be difficult. That is because signs of bed bugs can also hold true for other pests like mosquitoes or fleas.

With that said, first things first: Identification. Bed bugs are about half a centimeter long with a flattened, oval shaped body and are light brown in color.

Signs of Bed Bugs: A bed bug problem can present itself in several different ways. The first sign that bed bugs might be present in your home is the appearance of bites. However, bug bites can appear from other insects as well, so bites shouldn’t be the only indicator. Check for small blood spots on bed sheets – blood spots are a common sign of bed bugs, which either occur from being squashed during a feeding or a bed bug’s fecal matter. A more specific sign of bed bugs is the creatures themselves. Check for bed bugs in cracks and crevices in the walls, in the seams of mattresses and under, behind and in cracks in the furniture.

How do we get bed bugs, anyways? The good news is, you cannot just “get” bed bugs. They have to be transported from another source. Bed bugs are often found after traveling or visiting another person’s home. The bed bugs can crawl into your luggage and find a new home with you after unpacking.
