The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. The grills are smoking. This can only mean one thing… it’s springtime in Chicago! While the onset of spring is certainly exciting for many reasons, it can also be the start of pest invasions. In fact, we wouldn’t be one bit surprised to hear you’ve been noticing a slight increase of insects inside the home. Boxelder bugs, anyone?
Spring is the prime time for pests to appear indoors. It makes perfect sense, considering many insects have spent the past few months keeping warm in inconspicuous hiding places. As the temperatures rise (even if it’s just a little bit), insects and other pests will start making their way out of hiding. Luckily, there is one small thing you can do to help prevent pests in your home…spring cleaning!
Clean out the pantry.
The kitchen pantry is a prime target for pests looking for an easy meal, but a little spring cleaning can stop them in their tracks. Empty out the pantry completely. Throw out any expired foods or items that have been opened for several months.
Store food properly.
Aerex Pest Control recommends storing as much food as possible in airtight glass or plastic containers. Not only will this help maintain the food’s freshness, it will also prevent pests from getting inside.
Tip: Flour and cornmeal can be stored in the freezer until ready for use.
Clean up quickly.
Have a container that broke open? Is sugar seeping out of the bag? Any damaged container should be replaced immediately, and spills in the pantry should be cleaned up promptly.
Unfortunately, the kitchen isn’t the only place we need to spring clean! The entire house should be cleaned out and decluttered. Pay special attention to the attic, garage, basement and closets. Forgotten boxes or containers can expose some unwanted creatures. Even coat pockets should be checked, as a forgotten candy bar from December can support pests.
