Top 10 Pest Prevention Tips for Businesses

Pests and rodents aren’t simply a nuisance – they can severely affect your health and the safety of your staff. This is why bug, insect and rodent prevention is critical in protecting businesses from a pest infestation. From Chicagoland’s leading pest control company, here are Aerex’s Top 10 Pest Prevention Tips.

  1. Keep your business “Pest-Proofed” by being vigilant of building maintenance needs. Don’t let any damages, spills or technical issues go unnoticed. Even the smallest problem could result in a pest infestation.

  2. Get the whole staff on board with this one. Dispose of garbage regularly and store in sealed containers. If getting rid of waste is something your office struggles with, create a schedule and assign each day to a different staff member. Sometimes it takes a team effort to keep a working environment pest-free!

  3. Seal all cracks and holes on the outside of your business, including entry points for utilities and pipes. Insects and rodents can find their way inside even the tiniest of entries.

  4. Don’t overlook proper drainage at the foundation; install gutters or diverts, which will channel water away from the building.

  5. Many pests such as centipedes, thrive in cool, damp areas like garages, basements, cellars and attics. Even office buildings need to protect these areas from pests. Place a humidifier in these areas and make sure to fix plumbing leaks and seal any foundation cracks.

  6. Make sure your employees keep food sealed, stored and thrown away when finished – especially during the warmer months. We would all like to believe that our employees have the best manners, but it’s surprising how many open containers can be found in the fridge or the amount of crumbs left on the floor!

  7. Keep the space CLEAN. A daily clean-up is completely necessary, especially in high-volume areas like break rooms, eating areas and kitchenettes. Crumbs and trash are more likely to build up in these spots, which is an open invitation for insects to take over.

  8. Get the whole building involved in the action! If you work in a multi-unit building, the only way to eliminate pests completely is to have the entire building treated at one time. If you notice a pest infestation in your office, contact neighboring offices and inform them of the issue. If pests are in your office – it’s quite likely they have nearby neighboring areas.

  9. Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the building.

  10. Call an Aerex pest control professional to inspect for pests and rodents. We will identify the problem and control the pest(s) using the safest pest control procedures available to effectively eliminate the issue every time.
