The sheer mention of bed bugs is enough to make some people’s skin crawl. And unfortunately, we’ve got some bad news. Bed bugs are actually quite common. Present in all 50 states, bed bugs don’t discriminate against location or socioeconomic status. They can live virtually anywhere (i.e. malls, school busses, airplanes, trains, hotels) and bringing them home isn’t all that difficult.
Scared yet? Don’t be. There are plenty of simple ways to prevent a bed bug infestation. That being said, there is no guarantee you will never end up with a bed bug problem on your hands. Follow these steps if you suspect bed bugs in your home.
Step 1: Call the Professionals
Do not hesitate! Calling a professional pest control company is the only way to ensure proper bed bug removal. Attempting to handle the problem yourself can often times make it worse.
Step 2: Begin Removal
You need trained pest professionals with bed bug expertise to do the job right. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do some damage control before they get there. Use a vacuum to remove bed bugs around the home.
Step 3: Decrease Clutter
Bed bugs LOVE clutter because it gives them plenty of space to hide. Too much clutter can make it difficult for even the best bed bug professionals to treat an area properly. Make sure to do a thorough cleaning of your home to help pest experts and reduce the chances of a recurrence.
Step 4: Do the Laundry
Even if you’ve had a pest control company remove bed bugs, it’s imperative that you launder clothing and bedding. Bed bugs can be killed in 120 degree heat or higher. Run the cycle for at least 20 minutes.
