Dealing With an Ant Invasion

the effects of an untreated ant infestationAnts are one of the most common pests in North America, so try not to feel too disheartened if you end up with a row of tiny pests making their way into your home. It doesn’t mean your home is dirty, it just means they managed to find a food source, no matter how small, somewhere inside. Thankfully there are some steps you can take to take care of your ant problem!

They Move in Packs

The most important thing you can know about ants is that there is never, ever just one. If you see a lone ant, that means it’s likely scouting for food for its colony, so killing it before it finds any or reports back may save you an invasion. If you see a second ant after the first, it’s already too late — they’ve found you!

First Steps

So what should you do once you see more than one ant? The first thing is to figure out what they’re after. It could be something as simple as some crumbs near the baseboard, or they may have found their way to your pantry and into a box of cereal. Either way, find the source and remove it, then focus on keeping your home free of any food debris, as well as keeping all boxes and bags well-sealed.

Next, vacuum up some talc powder (to prevent the ants from setting up shop inside your vacuum) and then vacuum the ants that are already inside your home. In some cases, breaking the line like this is enough to stop the incursion.

Talk to the Pros

If you keep seeing ants finding their way inside your home, chances are you have a colony in your yard that needs to be taken care of. While there are certainly ways you can attempt to do so yourself, it’s worth noting that most ant colonies are massive, with tens of thousands of ants living underground in hard-to-reach tunnels.

That’s why it’s important to call in the pest control professionals to deal with removing or relocating ant colonies on your property. A professional can not only remove the colony, they can also help spot any trouble areas in your house or on your property that may entice ants to move in again. With the right help, these preventative measures can help make sure you don’t have a repeat performance of ants invading your space.
