Mouse-Proofing 101

RatWhile there are certainly ways to get rid of a rodent infestation, it’s always better to prevent them from entering in the first place. While some persistent mice might push their way through and find a way in regardless, there are certainly some steps you can take to lessen their chances of sneaking into your home.

Keep it Sealed

The first step to keeping mice out of your house is reducing the points where they can make their way in. Walk around the exterior of your home, looking for any points of ingress that are the size of a dime or larger. These can be air conditioner lines, dryer vents, foundation damage, and more. Items like lines and vents have specially made covers, while other holes may require more extensive repairs. A good item to keep on hand for when you discover small holes is steel wool, which mice cannot chew through. However, be sure to make sure it is properly anchored so that rodents cannot simply pull it out of the hole.

Another thing to keep sealed? The garage door! Having the garage door open is an invitation to every mouse and rat in the neighborhood.

Keep it Clean

Indoor pests go where the food is, so it’s important to keep anything that might look tempting to a rodent up off the ground and sealed away. This doesn’t just mean the obvious, like spilled human food, but also things like bird seed and grass or garden seeds. Pet food can be another big problem, so try feeding pets on a set schedule, the put the food away so it isn’t sitting out all the time.

Another aspect of keeping clean is reducing clutter. Mice love places to hide like piles of wood or toys next to the foundation of your home, so keep those things cleared away. Unfortunately, that also applies to landscaping — try to keep any flowers and bushes at least a few feet away from the exterior foundation.
